Many of the chapters have been individually reviewed by teaching professors and include descriptions of the fundamental principles underlying each technique, demonstrations of the instrumentation, and new problem sets and suggested experiments appropriate to the topic. The text integrates experiments and problem sets, including those requiring the use of spreadsheet programs such as Excel.
With many scientific degrees covering various areas of instrumental analysis it is always difficult to find one book that can cover all the subjects required, but this book certainly does. It is an extensive review .I would see this book as being dipped into by students rather than being read as an entity. This is the type of book that could be used by a student from any degree pathway with an analytical instrumental component and would cover techniques from year one to final year.
This book has developed and grown in size and stature and is much improved... Each chapter comes with a useful collection of additional material such as bibliographies, sources of spectral databases, experiments and problems. The worthy of specific attention is the coverage of spectral methods. Most major general textbooks choose to focus on the instrumentation and leave spectral interpretation to more specialized texts.
Unusually, this text has incorporated quite extensive sections on the interpretation, effectively removing the artificial boundary between the construction and function of the instrument and the understanding of the results that the instrument generates. This book is now a much stronger contender for adoption by course instructors.
