Analytical Chemistry and Quantitative Analysis by Hage and Carr

,

Analytical Chemistry and Quantitative Analysis by David S. Hage and James R. Carr presents concepts and procedures in a manner that reflects the practice and applications of these methods in today’s analytical laboratories. These methods are illustrated by using current examples from fields that include forensics, environmental analysis, medicine, biotechnology, food science, pharmaceutical science, materials analysis, and basic research.

The fundamental principles of laboratory techniques for chemical analysis are introduced, along with issues to consider in the appropriate selection and use of these methods—including the proper use and maintenance of balances, laboratory glassware, and notebooks, as well as mathematical tools for the evaluation and comparison of experimental results.

Basic topics in chemical equilibria are reviewed and used to help demonstrate the principles and proper use of classical methods of analysis like gravimetry and titrations. Common instrumental techniques are also introduced, such as spectroscopy, chromatography and electrochemical methods. Sideboxes discuss other methods, including mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy, throughout the text.

Special sections are included as sideboxes to indicate important developments in the history of chemical analysis and/or common applications of analytical chemistry to real-world problems. These sideboxes are also used to discuss and introduct the students to other important analytical methods, including mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy.

Illustration of methods goes beyond the standard inorganic and organic analyses that are common in many texts, and includes examples from fields that range from environmental science, pollution monitoring and industrial processes to pharmaceutical science, food testing, and clinical analyses.

End-of-chapter sections entitled “Topics for Discussion & Review” enable instructors and students to explore material and methods that are related to those presented in the chapter but that are normally not covered in a traditional course on quantitative analysis.

Exercises incorporated throughout the each chapter and end-of-chapter homework problems reinforce the topics introduced in the chapter-opening scenario. Most of these problems can be solved using elementary algebra. Sections are also included at the end of each chapter with “Challenge Problems,” some of which involve the use of spreadsheets and all of which allow the student to address the chapter’s material on a more in depth level.

Fundamentals of Analytical Chemistry 9th Edition, Skoog

,

Fundamentals of Analytical Chemistry 9th Edition, by Douglas A. Skoog, Donald M. West, F. James Holler and Stanley R. Crouch offers extensive coverage of the principles and practices of analytic chemistry and consistently shows students its applied nature. The book's award-winning authors begin each chapter with a story and photo of how analytic chemistry is applied in industry, medicine, and all the sciences.

To further reinforce student learning, a wealth of dynamic photographs by renowned chemistry photographer Charlie Winters appear as chapter-openers and throughout the text. Incorporating Excel spreadsheets as a problem-solving tool, the Ninth Edition is enhanced by a chapter on Using Spreadsheets in Analytical Chemistry, updated spreadsheet summaries and problems, an "Excel Shortcut Keystrokes for the PC" insert card, and a supplement by the text authors, EXCEL APPLICATIONS FOR ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY, which integrates this important aspect of the study of analytical chemistry into the book's already rich pedagogy.

New to this edition is OWL, an online homework and assessment tool that includes the Cengage YouBook, a fully customizable and interactive eBook, which enhances conceptual understanding through hands-on integrated multimedia interactivity.

The chapters dealing with titrimetry are fairly straightforward and, in the opinion of this reviewer, one of the strengths of the text. Specifically, the majority of the problems are well-explained to the student and the problems in the back of the text are helpful, especially with the increasing difficulty of the problems as one proceeds through their completion.

The authors do a good job of making this text both readable and engaging. I would like to think a student could sit down with a piece of paper, a calculator and pencil and work through most of these chapters in 1-2 hours with good comprehension. I enjoy the level of activity this book uses in terms of engaging you with interesting problems or real world examples.
